Project Happy Malaysia...

For Project Happy Malaysia, a brainchild from Vincent.

This happened many years back. As usual, I was heading home late evening after some curriculur activities in school when it began to rain cats-and-dogs. Buses were my only mean of transportation back then, from which I saw numerous dark clouds and occasional lightnings, which could only mean that the storm was here to stay. Although reminded a gazillion times by dear mother to bring an umbrella just in case, it was an advice I never heeded because for me, being seen using it will definitely reduce my cool factor by a few thousand points (I was young, ok? Bet you were the same as well).

All too soon, it was my stop. I abandoned my plan to make a quick dash home the moment I alighted as the heavy rain, coupled with the furious wind would probably slam me to a wall or drown me halfway home. I hurried over to the bus shelter to avoid further "damage" from the raging mother nature. Guess what? The place was already crammed with a dozen or two individuals, and for me trying to squeeze myself in would be practically impossible, given my size. No other choice but to stand as close as possible to the shelter to minimize the amount of raindrops soaking me albeit the fact that it was making me look sexy as I was wearing a white top, definitely doubled my coolness (triple if I brush my hair back with my hand *grins*). Still, I was literally being soaked to bits...

Out of nowhere, I suddenly felt the raindrops eased down on me. The natural reaction would be to look upwards to see if the rain is ceasing but too my surprise, what I saw was some form of plastic shelter hovering above me. A glance to my left revealed a young Malay lady, about my age, in the baju kurung styled uniform, holding an umbrella above me and herself. She gave me a smile (should be the cool factor kicking in!) and I quickly returned one, although still a little stunned as I did not expect this, thus not knowing what to react. I proceeded to thank her profusely for helping me out in such difficulties to which she replied that it was alright because she pitied me being drenched in the rain. A little chat ensued to which I will not bore you with the details (which I kinda forgotten as well...).

Few minutes later, another bus arrived to which the young lady mentioned that she needed to make a move and inquired if I would be alright. I thanked her again while informing her that since quite a number of people are boarding the bus, I would be left with some shelter at the bus stand. A quick goodbye ensued and the lady got onto the bus, heading off to wherever she was supposed to be going (come to think of it, I never even asked for her name). I was left with a smile on my face and a warm feeling in my heart at the thought of the kindness shown by one complete stranger to another... I proceeded to walk home much later when the rain ceased.

And this will be my happy Malaysia story, simple but still meaningful, at least to me. Occasionally, I am still reminded of it every other time I see people seeking shelter at a bus stand during rain...
